Re: Question on SB timing cover date code

The date coded timing cover concept sounds like it could evolve into a myth similar to the legendary hi nickel 010/020 blocks.

Does you timing cover have a tab like the one in the photo below? Is it stamped "11 68" or "11 69" as the number is difficult to read.

I borrowed this photo from a fellow NCRS member from an old thread. This timing cover is stamped "34 69" which was never sold over the counter. The last two digits of the GM part number must be 69 (XXXXX69).

Yes it has a timing tab like the one in your picture. Mine is stamped 7 70.

It just seems quite odd that the various timing cover stampings ("67", "68", "69", and "70") appear on timing covers made from 1967 to 1970. I guess it's just a coincidence.

          Dave:

Yes, it looks like my "4 67" cover has the same timing tab. Here are a couple of more pics.

            Mike,

Thanks for the verification. Apparently theses covers were never sold over the counter but were only installed on engines at the factory on 1966 and 1967 Chevrolets & Corvettes with the 6" balancers. If the stamped "67" is the last 2 digits of the GM part number I now wonder what the other number represents.
