I'm sure a knowledgable person will respond, but:

Big block or small block? On my C3 small block, I used a spring compressor rent-a-tool from Autozone - inserts through the shock absorber mount hole, has "fingers" to engage the coil spring. Be sure to reference the AIM for spring positioning criteria and some way to mark the top/bottom of the spring for reinstalling.
