what product works best to clean the outside of the fuel tank? Normal 50 years of crud! Has anyone had good results?

Original fuel tanks were terne coated steel. I don't know of any way to restore this finish to its original appearance. If its just dirt and debris, I'd use a good detergent solution and a soft brush. However, that's not going to do anything about oxidation that makes the tank seem dull compared to its original luster.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

I assume the tank is out of the car? I suggest Blue Magic metal polish. I polished a set of big block side pipes that had been on an early Duntov winner for about 20 years and they came out beautifully. Try aggitating the dirt/grime with wax and grease remover first. Then as a second attempt, used very fine steel wool and Blue Magic.
