    1996 No Power over 40MPH

A friend's 1996 convertible has been in storage for about 6 years. He flushed the fuel tank and lines, new in-tank fuel pump. New battery. The car looses power at 40 mph+. Do these have a "Limp Mode" if something is electrically awry? ECM?

I'm unfamiliar with C4 technology. Any thoughts of the top of your heads?

    Thanks,
    Rich

Rich, the first thing I would check is fuel pressure. and look for stored trouble codes.

New pump installed as a precaution but will check.

Using a gauge in the line? I could look up specs somewhere, or if you know the psi requirement, it would be helpful.

Trouble codes using a scanner? I have a OBDII scanner.

      Thanks,
      Rich

1996 is OBD II (the first year for a Corvette and most other cars) so your scanner should work fine.

It does have an "open loop" (limp home) mode. Is the "service engine soon" dash light illuminated? It should be if the vehicle is in open loop.

Thanks Joe, Good, I'll run a scan when I get over there. I'll check with him about the SES light. He didn't say.

He bought this car brand new and still has all original paperwork. Black, Red Interior, 2 Black Tops. 5 original tires, but he will replace. I think the car has about 20k miles on it, or less.

Has the new installed fuel pump been checked to verify correct installation. The in-tank system has a valve after the fuel pump that can leak pressurized fuel leaving the fuel pump.

              Richard,

Usually the limp mode is caused by the oxygen sensors. With the time it has set up you will probably have to replace at least one or more of them. Use Delco because the after market ones will cause trouble codes also.

Rich, fuel pressure is about 38to 45 PSI key on engine off. Running it may be closer to 38 , also watch the pressure to make sure it does not bleed down to quickly when engine is shut down.

Thanks all. I haven't made it over there yet as I can't reach my friend. I'll report in when I diagnose the failure using all of this info.

                  Much appreciated.
