1967 Muncie M21 4 Speed Side Plate Removal

I need to remove the side plate on my 67 Muncie M21 4 speed with the trans in the car - Is there enough room in the tunnel to remove it so I can replace the side cover with a new one with combs, seals and forks etc?
I have read that this can be done but I want to make sure before I open it up in the car. I have no plans to remove the trans. Just want to install the new plate assembly. The chassis manual makes it look easy, just have the trans in second gear b4 the removal.

I'm more concerned about the clearance requited to remove and replace the side cover assembly while trans in in the car.
Thank you all for your responses.

Don't know if this was your post or not...but the members have given some terrific advice.

C1 & C2 Corvettes - 4-sp shifter shaft seals, can you? - Can all three shifter shaft seals be replaced ('67 327) without pulling the transmission? It does NOT appear that the side cover will come off with the trans in the car.
