    a Riveting question

working on my '69 L46 convertible. Putting the underbody brackets back on and have completed most of the riveting. Thanks to this forum I got good advice, right equipment and they came out pretty good.

Except - I have to buy the heat shields and brackets that get riveted on the underbody and while researching what I need (mine were in tatters) and how they are attached, I discover the most rear brackets get riveted to the cross member. Ok, but then I realize there really is not an easy way to get the tool in through the frame to round over the end of the rivet. AIM calls it rivet part no 3828470. but the drawing looks like the normal flat head aluminum rivet. I look in the parts catalog and the hardware kit with the brackets include pop rivets. hmm. That would be easy and make sense. Then I look at other drawings with the same part number and find that the metal strip behind the glove box uses the same part number. But I used the small head aluminum rivet that I rounded over from the outside.

So what's correct? is the rivet number 3828470 a pop rivet? if it is, then I put the wrong rivets in the plate (long thin strip which the glove box frame screws to) and I will have to remove them.

Also, is there a master part number catalog with descriptions available for the 69?

    Thanks for your help folks.

    Re: a Riveting question

ok, I know I should have looked first before posting. I should have known someone else crossed this bridge before me. I have found a couple of posts that identify 3828470 as a pop rivet. The confusion I had was the AIM shows a drawing of said rivet the looks like a flat head instead of a pop rivet. Darn illustrators.

      Hi Rich,
I'm glad you were able to figure out what you were seeing in the AIM.When I was working on the underbody of my 71 I became curious about the number of different rivets I was seeing so I went through the 71 AIM to try to see just what was being used, and where.
There are 5 flat head rivets listed…. the part number denotes a specific length.
There are 9 pop rivets listed…. the part number denotes size and length.
Then there are 18 other rivets listed…. some with smaller thicker flat heads, oval heads, or hollow shafts for example.
I also became curious about how some of the flat head rivets were set… the rivet used for the spare tire tub to strap connection for example has a very precise and uniform 'set' end unlike the usual 'mushroom' appearance typically seen on flat rivets.
      Interesting little mysteries.
      Regards,
      Alan

        Re: a Riveting question

        Hi Alan,

no wonder I was confused. 31 different rivets for a C3. Holy cow. Thanks for the tip on the spare tire tub. I haven't got to that yet buy I will pay attention to the rivet prior to disassembly and painting.

Well I have finished my chores for the weekend and I am headed to the garage to fix my error from yesterday.

          Hi Rich,
          Here's an example.
Now that I'm looking I see this appearance on many 68+ tub/straps.
          Regards,
          Alan
