Does anyone know of a soft clutch for a 63 SWC

In this hobby of thousand of guys, there must be one who knows clutches. I posted this on the other forum months ago and got no answers except use the OEM diaphragm type. That, as far as I know, is what's in there now. I went to a car show, not only to show my car, but to try other clutches. Out of the C2's that were there, there was one car that the clutch felt softer then mine. But as luck would have it the owner had no idea what type of clutch he had. I would think guys with weak ankles like mine and women there would be a market for a soft clutch. Any ideas.

A LUK RepSet diaphram clutch is about as mild as you will find. Most clutch manufacturers publish the clutch force, which you can compare to OEM or against one another.

I would also check out ALL components of your clutch linkage and compare them to original lengths, etc. JohnZ and others have published these dimensions in the past. I can find them for you if you cannot. I also believe there is a 2 position setting for the clutch pedal linkage. If you have this adjustment you can change to the other position and see if it makes a difference. It should.....and hopefully in the correct direction for you.

What clutch is in there now?? Perhaps someone put in a B&B type (Borg & Beck 3 finger type) or a street/strip diaphram type over the years. That would make a marked difference in pedal pressure, especially without a very big over-center spring for the B&B.

Search the threads about clutches. I learned from one that the pedal travel for C2/C3 is shorter than typical, so many aftermarket clutches won't operate properly (either will not completely release or engage regardless of adjustment).

Lars did the testing. Should be in CF C2 Archives. Hays did not fare well.

As you may know, the '63 was set up for two different clutch ratios. As built, total clutch pedal travel is about 6.5", but it can be reconfigured to only 5" by removing a couple of bolts in the linkage under the IP, and placing them in alternate holes. I recall the pedal pushrod also has to be moved to the opposite side of the Z-bar, too. Check out your '63 shop manual. It could be that the linkage was set up for the short throw years ago.

A telltale sign is the pedal height. At the OE setting the clutch pedal is at about the same height as the brake pedal, but with the quick ratio the clutch pedal height is less than the brake pedal.

The OE '63 10.4" clutch offers about 2350 pounds of clamping force, and I expect the LuK replacement is about the same. The 11" clutch for big blocks and later small blocks is probably a few hundred pounds more.
