Wondering if anyone has added a clutch safety starter switch to a C1 4spd? If so how and what parts were used...

Re: c1 clutch saftey switch
The few newer cars that are still manual transmissions have it.
My 1996 Mazda pickup would not spin the starter if the clutch was not depressed.
I'm sure a brake light switch could be re-purposed to provide a facsimile of a modern starter/clutch safety switch.
I think its unnecessary if you invest a little thought in the process when you start an old 60's car...- Top

Re: c1 clutch saftey switch
Corvette started using them in 1969 so it should be very simple to buy the switch and bracket for one from that era and follow the wiring diagram for that year as well. They mount on the clutch pedal. A brake light switch is too light duty to work in this application.- Top

Re: c1 clutch saftey switch
I just seen a used one, not sure how the 69 and C1 peddles are different, but really want this due to my parking of cars real close and tight... one opps and smash... I have a car that has it and well as I said just might be wise thing for my parking situation... I was hoping someone had done to save time and not drill any holes... I was looking and could use a micro switch that would not require any large holes... plus it has a long life cycle on the switch. Hmm, maybe a winter project, the 69-73 switch is rather large.
A neutral safety switch would be better yet... but pretty hard on a stick shift...- Top

Re: c1 clutch saftey switch
The down side of the clutch interlock is that you can't reach in the window to start or turn over the engine when doing tune-ups, valve adjustments, etc. Also you can't use the starter to move the car off the road in case of an engine problem. I by passed the interlock on my 70 Corvette at least 40 years ago and never found a reason to miss it.- Top

Re: c1 clutch saftey switch
Personally, I've learned to ALWAYS park a car with the gearshift in neutral and to push the clutch completely in when starting the car since I was 15. I don't release the parking brake until I'm ready to move the car as well.
Its in my DNA by now. This idea is just adding another Bubba point-of-failure in your starting setup IMO.
But its your car.- Top
