What level of detail on my frame restoration?

    Guys,

I'm currently getting ready to put the various paint marks on my 69 chassis resto. This resto was started by someone else who didn't document any existing factory markings and simply sandblasted everything. Any factory markings are gone. In light of this, I'm planning on having this car judged so should I simply replicate whatever factory markings, stencils, and paint daubs that were typically placed on a 69 car, like, tie-rod markings, steering box markings, driveshaft stripes, etc, etc? Basically just thinking about maximizing points at this point, but not sure what to do since I don't have pictures I can show the judges to prove how it came from the factory and don't want to be accused of "over restoring" it. Thanks for your thoughts.

Believe me inspection marks present or not is not enough points wise to be of concern. Put your efforts into the CDCIF judging as the markings are so small as to not affect anything that could be considered over restoration. And do not be concerned about judges knowledge of inspection marks as they should be very familiar with GM worker practice. Same goes for finishes and "what looks correct and what does not".

Very unfortunate that original markings were not documented prior to being stripped, cleaned, etc., but some amateur and even professional restorers seem to have little time and attention to this historic detail, points not important, history should be. I suggest you get the Quanta kit that would apply to your car, including frame stencil:

you will find some entertaining reading here.

And your questions re. CDCIF matrix for evaluating the appearance of originality in Flight Judging should be answered.

You can overdo it, best to look at your TIM and JG as well as what the Quanta kit indicates, it gives you guidance on this, especially things that involve points, like the frame stencil (roll it don't spray it). For instance, for my '64 it states: "......the steering knuckle has inspection paint of various colors (typically orange) have been observed on the vertical areas of the forging on some original cars". As a chassis judge, IMO the steering box is the one so many get wrong or overdo.
