Question on gas tank mounting straps for 69

    Guys,

I'm installing the gas tank on my 69 and not sure how to affix the rear end of the straps to the frame. According to the AIM and to the Paragon catalogue there seems to be a nut somewhere that is already affixed to one of the structures so they only sell the bolts to secure the straps. Problem is, there isn't a nut in the frame where I would think the strap mounts. There is a square cutout in the rear frame crossover where the back part of the tank sits. It looks like a perfect fit for the strap to go in there and bolt down but again there is no nut. It seems like according to the AIM there is a rectangular nut that might be mounting maybe to the strap itself and the bolt then goes through the frame and screws to this nut but my strap doesn't have those nut. I've attached some pics of what I'm talking about if it helps. Thanks.

    Mike

    Hi Mike,
As you surmised the straps typically have a square nut attached to them at the holes you're seeing.
Things can get pretty rusted back there and perhaps the nuts 'broke loose' when the bolts and straps were removed?
    Regards,
    Alan

If you look carefully you can just see the square shape of the nut. Also you can see that the long length of the bolt is required only to first 'grab' the strap and then pull it down to secure the tank.

Thanks Alan that's what I figured. I'll order done replacement straps. Do you know offhand what the factory finish is on those?

        Hi Mike,
On my 71 (and I'll bet on your 69) the straps were painted the usual semi-flat black.

More accurately, dip painted. If you see originals, drips and runs are evident.
