    Oil for 327

What motor oil(s) do you have most overall confidence in that contain zinc and other components designed for c-2 engines. I have been using Brad Penn but am concerned it is a partial synthetic. I don't want to add an additive to the oil. Thanks! Michael Kalogridis

I'm running Rotella 15-40 non synthetic in my 65' 365hp car with no problems.

Those are good oils, I have also been using Valvoline Racing VR1 20W-50, it also has high ZDDP content and is about $5/quart.

I have use it for years and it is easy to get and works well. Try it you will like it.

            Michael,
That question has been asked by many before you and there has been a great deal said (written) on this subject - and much of it is in forum archives - a lot of good stuff. Allow me to save you some research time - I am attaching two pdf files that should answer all your questions. One article is written by Duke Williams (great article) , the other is a Motor Oil grading guide that will enhance your understanding of oil in general.

By the way - filters - also discussed a in great length in previous threads; I think you will find that the consensus of members that have been around for a long time advise against using AC 141 reproduction filters. Instead they recommend using a WIX brand filter, # 51143, same filter available from NAPA, their # is 114. Among other things the "cans" on these filters is metal instead of paper like the AC repros.

Ed I agree the WIX filter seems to be a better quality filter. I never used a NAPA filter so I cant say.

Remember when using older threads that things keep changing now days. I have been told that diesel oils which up until recently have the needed ZDDP, but that it is being fazed out of this oil also. I have not researched this so I don't know if it is so or not. My intent here is only to say keep up on these oils when ever you buy more.

As I understand, the NAPA "is" the WIX filter, with a NAPA pn. Notice the PN contains the same # 114. When I purchased one at a NAPA store I asked the sales clerk and he stated that their parts book indicated that the manufacturer was WIX.

                    Russ,

I think that may be a myth that has already been debunked. As long as the bottle says API CJ-4 or CI-4, everything is cool from a ZDDP standpoint. But you are right, it pays to stay up on things in case something changes!

Brad Penn has an oil designed for older engines that have flat tappet cams.

Also STP is a high zinc content as an additive for oils without it. I've always use it with Penzoil 10W30.

NAPA Gold #1143. Made by WIX in the USA. Very high quality..................better than most (or all) others on the market. I know Duke likes Baldwin filters, and I am sure they are also very high quality. I don't have their part number handy, but it should be easy to find.

I derived this Baldwin filter # from a previous thread. You can use either aBaldwin P18 or P18HD. I could not find Baldwin filters in my area, went with NAPA (aka) WIX.

And while we are on the subject of filters - Air Filters; Paper filter for a 64 L76 is the WIX 42070. NAPA # for the exact same filter is 2070, about $9.00 but.... if it is not stocked in your local NAPA store (and probably isn't) then they will charge you a shipping fee from the warehouse - another $8 or $9.
