    You can't.

I did this recently on a 72, and you'll have to raise it to get them (the front ones) replaced no matter how hard you try. Watch out for the distributor hitting the firewall as you raise it up.

FYI the new "correct" motor mounts from Corvette Central are essentially perfect.

Did you raise the engine with a engine puller? What about the rear? Thanks frank

I used a jack on a jack tray on a lift. With an engine puller you have to remove the hood, and that's too much like work.

Yup, a jack is the best way to do it. Even if one does not have a lift, just put the car up on ramps and use a jack to raise the engine. It does not need to be raised very far. Very simple.

2x6 or 2x8 underneath it sure helps to spread the load as well.

I do not like to jack on the bottom of the oil pan. So, I use a simple, wooden, u-shaped device that seats on the forward oil pan RAILS. Very simple to make from 2X4. Actually, one could probably also place the jack on the balancer without hurting anything.

I cheated and lifted it by the pan.

However, it's not that difficult to make a U-shaped bracket as Joe suggests. The down side is that you might bend the lip on the oil pan depending where you place the support. It's not difficult to narrow the wood - or use a narrower piece - to avoid that.

I had such a bracket around here at one time, but it disappeared without me knowing it. I'm sure someone was being "helpful".

I don't like using the balancer because a round object on a flat jack or piece of wood just invites tipping.

                      Patrick,
That's what I was wondering. I was thinking a 8"x8"x2" piece of wood directly on the oil pan would distribute the stress of the jack enough to eliminate any chance of damage to the pan. My mounts are only a couple of years old, so hopefully I won't have to make this decision in the near future.
Didn't mean to hijack your thread Frank.

I use soft wood to make the support---like douglas fir or pine. So, the oil pan rails "dig into" the wood rather than the wood distorting the pan.
