Is the tunnel cover on the 57's screwed and bonded to the floor? The car I'm working on had been bonded but the AIM has a note on the assembly page that cement was removed... The car had some work done and was raced so don't know if this is supposed to be bonded or was added later?

Thanks Dan, I can see where it would help strenghten the floor but can see why you had trouble.. the tunnel on this one was loose but has the black bonding material all around it.. and loose fiberglass on top the bonding material where it lifted off a thin layer of the floor panel instead of the bonding material breaking free.- Top

Re: April Built '57 Tunnel Cover - Bonded?
Alan, it looks like a previous owner worked very hard to get the cover off and damaged the fiberglass in the process. I do know this - it is next to impossible to get the upper rear shifter bolt in and tightened when in the car. I don't know what a Powerglide is like. But being able to remove the tunnel would help immensely. So if I were you, when you have the tranny back in the car and buttoned up, glue it down with some black RTV. Then you can get it back off if you ever need to remove the trans again.

Dan, I was looking at the shifter (Hurst) and thinking the same thing. I have an old factory shifter/linkage but not sure it's good enough to put in. Also, the transmission is off a '62, so someday it may go.. The more I think about it the better RTV looks. Actually looks like a real bad design.- Top
