Originally, the black, or any color for interior pieces like the cluster, package tray, heater cover under the dash and kick panels, was acrylic lacquer. However, it was unbuffed. All exterior, including the glovebox between the seats was buffed, with some areas below the beltlines just barely..

What type of black paint are you using? In order to emulate what the factory did you could do the same using lacquer. If you're using something else, you'll want to try to get a result similar to the unbuffed lacquer. Semi gloss may be a bit too dull, definitely not gloss, so I'd say something in between.

When I restore interior pieces like that, I use lacquer over a red oxide primer, and I try not to lay it on too wet. The results are usually pretty close to what the factory result was.

Here are a few photos of some original turquoise pieces. The underside edge of the cluster shows the resultant factory applied sheen. The heater cover nad other original pieces on this car had similar sheen.

The right side of the heater cover is original paint, the left corner to the left of the masking tape stripe and the defroster vents and speaker grille is my respray to test the match.

Here I compared my result to the original underside lip of the cluster.

Then I stripped and primed everything and applied the lacquer, left as-is, and was done.

Ed, For black, I recommend Duplicolor acrylic lacquer in the spray bombs. I get mine at NAPA and I've seen at other auto parts shops like Autozone etc. You can buy a can and do some test panels before you commit to the real parts.

My advice...Error on the gloss side....we took a points deduct a couple of years ago at Frisco for being too dull...I agreed with the deduction.

Our painter got it wrong and i knew it too late going into judging.

Eric, To remove the original lacquer and primer I use Capt Lee's paint remover on the color then lacquer thinner and a Scotchbrite pad on the primer, on both fiberglass and metal pieces. Then I do any repairs as needed.

A pictorial of the refinishing process in here....
