1963 Tach and Speedometer Cable Color

I picked up a 1963 speedometer cable at the Carlisle show a few weeks ago and may install it because it's in better condition than my original. My original has a few burn/rub through marks on the grey plastic. I have read the color was different in the 64 model year, I was told this cable came from a 63 car so I am curious what 63 guys think about this color, it's the lighter cable in the pics.

You can see in the pics the tach cable looks darker than the others, the outer housing measures approx. 21 1/4".

Tim - don't own my 1963 Z06 anymore, otherwise would check. But believe those cables are the correct color for a late 1963. Of course that is providing CRS hasn't set in permanently!

Tim, I agree with Rick, 63 tach or speedo cables are another one year only(gray),there may be a few carried over for 64, but i have not seen one yet on a 64 during judging.

        Thanks Rick and Ed,

The top cable in the picture is the speedometer cable that came with my 63, it's a early car. The speedometer cable under that is the one I bought in Carlisle, it's exactly the same length except the color seems just a shade lighter. I don't know if the engine heat, grease or whatever could cause the color difference.

The tach cable is another Carlisle find in very good condition and it's the darkest grey of all, from my research the length (21 1/4") indicates the second design cable. I want to use that also because that part had been replaced with a black cable when I got the car.

Tach and Speedometer cables on a 63 are gray. Tach and Speedometer Cables on a 1964 are white.

            Joe Ray,

That's what I understand also so what's your opinion on the lighter speedometer cable I mention above, I was told it came from a 63.

Tim, the speed cable gray coating is molded over the metal ends on 63 cables, in 64 the metal ends were crimped over the plastic coating.I am not sure that there was a white cable for 64 I believe the JM says there are beige?? your cables all appear to be 63 I can say for sure as my eyes are not what they use to be.

Agree that all the cables that are pictured appear to be for 1963. Also, agree with JR 1964 cables tended to be white, although with aging probably could be called more beige than white

                  Tim,

Here are some photos of what I believe is an original 64 Speedo cable. Looks to me like it started out beige and yellowed from there. Regards, Dan

Learn something new everyday, I never knew the 1964 cable ends were different than the 63 version. Thank you everybody for the input it is very helpful.

I had reproduction cables for my 63 and they are IMO, junk. The tach cable is a few inches to long so I installed the 63 tach cable pictured above and it fit perfect.
