    wiring harness tie wraps

I got the tie wraps that fasten to left inner fender to hold the main harness and the TI harness from either Lectric Limited or Paragon. I can't remember which. I put them on about a month ago to hold the wires during the body drop. Yesterday, I began to finish the wire routing, and I noticed all the new tie wraps had broken from simply sitting for a few weeks in a car that had not even been been started. I can't believe how worthless these parts are.

I saw someone on Ebay selling a single used and very beat up tie wrap for $50! I have some of my original $50 tie wraps but not enough. I know lots of people on this board have replaced their engine wiring harnesses. How did you solve the tie wrap problem? Are there any good new tie wraps being sold?

    Patrick,
I got mine from John Messinger. Not cheap but far less than $50.

Do you mean used originals or high quality new parts? How does one contact John Messinger?

              Pat,

i have the the same problem. I think I've replaced everyone of them on my 67. Just got through putting the front harness in my 66. I bought some from Dr Rebuild based on a Saturday recommendation I found in an old thread. They are the same as the ones I got from Paragon.

please post if you find good ones.

Just as big a problem with the repo straps is the fact that they won't stay put in the mount holes. The hard repos can be heated with a heat gun and pre-formed. They then won't break but still won't stay in the fender holes.

In regard to the other ties, the ones that Jimmy referenced and used to tie the engine harness to the hood latch cable across the firewall. There is a source for these that are very close to originals. They are very flexible, in fact, the vendor (AMK Products" catalog reads "correct rubber-like material", and carry a reference to the GM part number 9422033 which is the part number for these ties in the AIM.

The picture shows a hard plastic repro that I got from either Paragon or Dr. Rebuild and the bottom is one from AMK. We compared it to an original and it is very close. Much more correct than the others. These are very soft and flexible and have a P19 casting up near the T head. As I recall, the original we looked at had this same casting. The hard plastic repros do not.

They also have the push in straps that hold the harness to the inner fenders, but I'm don't know if theirs are any better than other repros. I'll try to get by their place and check them out. They are in Winchester VA, about 45 miles from me.

They are also an excellent source for reproduction bolts, screws, etc. They have many of the correct headmarks etc.

While you are at it , would you please ask them if they make there own windshield wiper "shaft covers". I have applied two sets so far , from two different vendors , and both have cracked within weeks .

                          Don,
If you are looking for the straps in the AMK catalog, here is the link to the PDF pages that have the straps.
                          http://www.amkproducts.com/Catalog_PDF/165-176.pdf.

Plastic straps are on paged 174 & 175 of the AMK catalog. Unfortunate, that AMK lists product applicability by Ford, Chrysler & GM; within the GM search options it lists parts that are applicable to a lot of Chevy vehicles ..... except Corvette. It takes some effort to find a part that has the original GM P/N and then cross reference it to an AMK product.

BTW, I just received (today) a set of black and white straps that I ordered from LIC last week - before this thread began. I will keep an eye on the LIC straps to see how they hold up - and report the results in this forum and if they fail in the near future I will ask LIC for a credit against my next order for something else.

                            Don,

No , I could not find them in there catalog either .

On my first set they split upon installation. On my second set , I also heated them first , but found one split and the other with two splits in the upper portion the next time I looked ..

And by the way, I think I too have replaced almost all the" tie wraps" at least once already , I just assumed I got a bad batch the first time .

OK, I'm really confused now! Seems we go back and forth on the "retainer" and "strap" So here are the two, so can we please call them either a retainer or strap as per GM listing. The retainer (two shown) originally was a little wider then the repo, original on right ( also notice the pin which pushes into the body has a slight angle at end) All of these, C2 retainers were black
As for the strap, the 63 & 64 appear to be off white, original strap from a Mar64.
