    c-1 heater block off plate.

the judging manual calls for the clutch head screws to insert from the firewall side. i believe this conclusion is based on nolands book page 140, which shows a RESTORED c-1 heater delete block off plate. anybody out there with an un-molested c-1 heater delete corvette who can chime in on whether the clutch head screw inserts from the cockpit side of the firewall vs the engine side of the firewall. since the heater equipped c-1's have their heater nuts on the firewall side, i suspect noland and the JM may be incorrect. yer thoughts? thanks, mike

    Mike,

Talked with Marty Fowler earlier about your problem as his 1961 Sebring racer had no heater but Bud Gates installed one before he sold the car. He thought the details were in the Assembly Manual and quoted a page that it might be found. He could not offer any information as his car had the heater added. The mechanic at Gates had left the block off plate under the right seat. Bud Gates said he could not sell the Sebring Racer in Indiana without a heater. Ha Ha! Times have changed.

        Mike
I just finished reviewing the 1960 assy manual and also found no reference
to the heater blockoff plate. I can't imagine why the orientation of the bolts
would be different than the heater housing mounting.

My '57 AIM (Mid-America @ 1977 copyright) shows the plate on page K24 - unfortunately the print cuts off either the first or the first & second digits of the part # leaving 86546; but the bolt is entering from the firewall side. Didn't the heater have studs?
Maybe Mike's master carries the full part #?

'59 AIM confirms the # as 186546. Good Luck.

i was looking in the pro section in the back of the 57,61 and 62 AIMs. didn't think to look up front. thanks much loren et all. i'll have to remove the cockpit firewall insulation to get to the block off plate fasteners.the AIM on K24 clearly shows the clutch head screws exposed on the engine side of the firewall. i hate dealing with the mushroom rubber pieces that retain the insulation to the firewall.and i even have richard M's installation tool. oh well, here goes. mike

                Mike,

Info in the JM came from a couple of unrestored AirBox photos I took over the years and the AIM. See attached photo.

Mike, Be cautious using the tool IF those rubber fasteners are originals. DON'T use the tool on them if originals. It will tear them as they'll be too brittle to stretch. If you're using new fasteners then you'll be okay. A little soapy water on the rubber tip before insertion in the tool will help, but not too much. Sometimes use no soap at all on the ones if the holes are wallowed out alot. On the doubled up insulation have a helper push on the head of the fastener inside to ease installation.

Here's a video of me using the tool on a '59 as a refresher course.....
