Help with source for correct standard 64 front brake drums and springs

I've been searching on the forum for a thread about the correct drums and springs and where can I find them, can anyone tell me a source?

I bought a couple pairs from Zip, Once I got a pair that matched, that do not have the spring groove and didn't have the raised smooth, flat area inboard of the spring groove that rides outside the backing plate. I ordered a set from Paragon that were the set that came with springs, the drums didn't match, grooves were missing, and the springs were the round stock. they do offer the correct flat stock spring.

I have one original drum with the spring when I bought the car, but the other side was missing the spring and I had to cut the drum off the car because the brake was seized.

    Don,

I just did a search on EBay Motors in the vintage car and truck parts section. I typed in Corvette Brake Drums and several pair of NOS and used brake drums and shoes came up. I'd start there. That's were I bought drums for my '64.

    Regards,

    James

One needs to be extremely cautious if purchasing USED brake drums. If I were purchasing brake drums, I would not touch a used drum unless it was of standard size and un-scored or damaged. Few used drums will be found in this condition.

I bought NOS drums. I simply stated what I found on eBay in my reply to Don. Unless the seller would guarantee that the drums were well within the usable maximum diameter I too would not buy a used set.

Bought some from Eckler's years back for my 63 Metallic brake car. Besides all the incorrect items mentioned above, the offset of lining surface to mounting face surface was incorrect. Drums would not fit up to backing plates. Had to reuse my old drums recut within tolerance with new matrix ceramic linings. Work great once run in - better than metallics. Adjustment slots are in drums too, not backing plates, to preset adjustment s before auto adjust mechanisms came into play.

If NOS I assume that they are in the original boxes. Are the boxes yellow/brown or the later white with blue lettering.

What are the part numbers on the boxes, and what are the casting numbers on the drums? Also is there any other stamped or cast in data like the maximum diameter of 11.090", and also look for a stamped "X"?

Casting numbers changed over the years that replacement drums were available, but I'm not sure about part numbers,

Base and J-65 drums are the same casting number, but the part numbers are different due to the finer finish on the J-65 drum friction surface. Front J-65 drums also have a slightly thicker web than base drums. Evidence indicates that J-65 finished drums are stamped with an "X", but maybe only the front drums, to distinguish them from base-finished drums.

Thank you all for the input. I do have one original drum with the adjustment slot and I don't think I would buy used drums. I'll try Ebay for NOS drums. I received one new "OEM style" drum from Paragon. I asked them to screen their stock for a match but came up empty. They ordered another supply of drums, but can't tell me if they will receive a match to the one I have. I discovered Paragon receives the drums then send them out to have the anti-chatter spring groove machined in.

              Thanks again.
