Assuming the main case, extension housing, and side cover are all original to the transmission, the transmission is a 1965 model year Muncie. The VIN derivative may indicate it's from a passenger car assembled at Oshawa, Ontario. The VIN derivative doesn't look right to me, though. It's unimportant since Muncies installed in other Chevrolets were the same as those installed in Corvettes so in which model the transmission originally resided is a moot point.

        Re: 1966 trans vin number

Thanks for the info Joe, can I assume transmission is correct number for car since it was built September 65, but not original to car? I have a 66 and 69 corvette and looks like both cars do not have original 4 speeds, looks like trannys had a hard life in the 60's.

          Ken------

The Muncie 4 speed transmission changed in significant ways for the 1966 model year. I have no information that early 1966 used 1965 transmissions. It's very possible that they did but I cannot confirm that.

For the sake of identification I would double check the stamped VIN derivative you have reported. Also post all the casting dates you can find. There is a stamped in date on the right side sort of opposite to where you found the VIN stamping. It will start with a P or a T. Most likely a P. The casting numbers you list were also used for the 1964 model year. There was a change in the tail shaft lower parting line in '64. The "584" replaced the 429 tailshaft hsg around February '65.

I will double check numbers & try to locate stamped date.
                Thank you

Took another look and the numbers above are correct, I did find a number 6 on right side of main case approx. 1/2" tall, below and a little left of the "G" in (General Motors Corp stamping) other than that no stampings that I can see starting with P or T.
