Ride Height sensor rod

This is a technical question but not about a Corvette. Hope you don't mind.
My tow vehicle and daily driver is a 2004 GMC Yukon XL 2500 with quadrasteer.
I have been searching all over the internet for a part for it.
Here's the part I need.

Left rear ride height sensor rod. One of the rubber ends is broken off. My mechanic says the rubber ends break quite easily.
The overall length this rod is about 7-1/4. Yes I can buy the entire sensor and rod but they are not cheap.
I also have been thinking about buying a shorter rod. Then making one good rod out of two with via welding.

Any suggestions. I do not have a part number for the rod. Thanks, John

The rod and the sensor are separate parts and are available separately from GM. The rear sensor rod, used for both left and right sides, is GM #22189722. It carries a current GM list price of $33.67. I'd just buy the rod and forget about the welding.

By the way, the original part number for the rod was GM #15815642 which was replaced by the 22189722. So, the current part may differ in some ways from the original, perhaps even some betterment. But, it will be 100% functional. Now, I know you're probably really concerned with originality here and want the exact, original configuration (for when you have the truck judged). In that case, you'll have to seek out a 15815642.

Joe, Thanks very much. My mechanic said the part was discontinued. But I will call the dealer myself on Tuesday and give him your numbers.
Judging is out of the question now as I had a ton of hoses replaced under the hood with NAPA stuff. Also had all new hydraulic brake lines replaced. The lines are now black. Wonder what the deduct are for those. They are supposed to have a tad of SS in them also so they won't rust out. But since the GMC in 12 years old if thesenew lines rust out I will be lucky to be alive as over the hill now.

It's possible that the part might have been very recently discontinued but I kind of doubt it. It has applications well after 2004. In any event, I checked eBay and there are plenty of new GM examples for sale at good prices.

By the way, I think if one were to purchase the left side sensor (GM #15128648), the rod is included with it. However, the rod is available separately under GM #22189722.

Joe, Just ordered one on Ebay. One guy had one on sale. Hopefully it fits as its listed for a 1500 series. My GMC is a 2500.
Anyhow time will tell although not expected to arrive for two weeks. Yes there are quite a few listed. I messed up calling the part a "rod".
GM calls it a "Link". If it fits I will order another one.. GM has used the same part for many years. 2000 to 2014.

Yes, the actual GM nomenclature for the part is LINK. I just used the term "rod" to be consistent with your terminology.

The 22189722 is the link required for your 2004 Yukon XL 2500 application as well as many other applications.

Joe, I received the 22189722 link. It's not even close to what I need. It's about 1/2 the length and the rubber ends are not installed at the correct angle.
What I might be doing is taking the new one above. Cutting it in half. Then welding a half to my old rod with the broken rubber end. Then I will have a spare 1/2 link or rod to repair the other side incase it breaks. And we all know it will. Thanks again, John

Are you sure the piece you got is a GM #22189722? In other words, is it in a GM package, hopefully sealed? GM #22189722 is the part which GM says is correct for your specific application (i.e. 2004 GMC Yukon 2500 XL).

Joe, Yes the part is in the original GM package. Unsealed. Never tampered with. It's the wrong part Joe. But my helper has it and the broken one at his shop right now. He's taking the short new rod. Cutting it in half. Then welded it onto the broken rod-with correct overall length. Then painting the part and I am picking it up tonight. Very easy to install.
So now I will have h 1/2 of the new rod for a spare in case the other rod rubber end breaks off. Thanks anyhow for your help.

I think the Cadillac application is likely Escalade which is the same, basic platform as your Yukon. This part has wide application across all GM truck lines from about 2000 to 2014. I'm absolutely amazed that the 22189722 does not work for your application.

One thing you could try: give your GM dealer the complete VIN number of your Yukon and see if they can come up with any other part number for the link. I'm really curious on this.

By the way, how long is your original rod end-to-end and how long is the 22189722?

Joe, Original is about 7-1/2" overall. The Caddy rod was very short. It's already cut in half. I would guess it was about 6" or less. And the rubber ends would not have worked if it was the correct length. They are both pointing the same direction. The one on my 2004 has the two rubber ends in opposite direction.

The example of the 22189722 that I see on eBay does not look to be what I would call very short. It looks to me to be about 7" in length. The rubber ends are both oriented in the same direction but don't those ends rotate so that you could orient them like your original rod?

Then this situation is a real mystery to me. As I mentioned previously, you can give your GM dealer parts department your full VIN and they should be able to tell you what part fits this vehicle. I'm very curious as to what it is because the only part I can find that GM says is applicable to your vehicle is the 22189722.
