Just got a hold of a correct Quadrajet for my car but it needs a rebuild. Was at Carlisle this weekend and met Jeff Dotterer, seemed like a nice, knowledgeable guy. Anyone have experience with him or possibly a recommendation? Preferably on Long Island NY. Thanks!

Re: Carb rebuilder
About 25 years ago, my father used Allstate Carburetor & Fuel Injection, 143 Brightside Ave, Central Islip, NY 11722, Phone: (631) 234-8327. I brought it back for another rebuild a few years back. I would use them again. When I installed it on my car the throttle was a little sticky (I've since learned that many people add stronger springs to return the throttle) and they took care of it. A few weeks later I installed a new fuel pump and the carb began to leak from the areas circled in the picture below. The picture is PRE restoration. They ended up using some sort of epoxy to cover those pressed in caps. I'm sure that would be a deduction but it fixed the problem. They told me there was no other way of fixing that particular problem, though I've not confirmed that.
I don't have a post restoration picture but the carb looked brand new when I got it back. You can have it rebuilt or pay the extra money to have the coatings restored. I know they do work for Corvette restoration shops in our parts here on the Island.

Re: Carb rebuilder
The best Q-Jet expert I've found is Cliffshighperformance.com . He only works on Q-Jet and has been doing it for a long time. He built his reputation by modifying Q-Jets for specialized off-road purposes, and published a book on the subject. So restoring one back to stock is cake for him. The forum on his website shows his depth of knowledge and following.
Search the other threads about this resource for more information.
Whomever you're considering, it's a good idea to ask how they ensure the carb is working properly before shipping it to you. One thing Cliff does I like is each carb is tested by installing it on a dyno mounted big block. This greatly reduces problems and the need for rework.Mark Edmondson

I can tell you when I want a carb I go to Custom Rebuilt Carbs, in New Jersey. You can contact them, the owner is Phil, he may remember me. I have a Q-Jet for my 68 Nova, looks like new from 1968 and runs like a swiss watch. I also have had 780 Holleys, and Holley Tri Carb set up from Phil for my 69 Vette. All worked better than you would expect. Stands behind his work.
Phil is well known, honest to a fault, and his carb work is terrific. He may have the right carb in stock or you can send him yours. He will also set it up for your engine specs.
Good luck, Doug- Top

Re: Carb rebuilder
I have not. They tend to mix up parts from different models to create a correct looking unit on the outside, but with incorrect mixed up parts on the inside. This was found true with their carter AFB's. He did make it good though for me, but I pity the poor guy who accepts one on face value as being correct. My 3461s didn't work for crap when I first got it. They exchanged parts for me that I found incorrect, but it still took me more than a year to sort it out - finally having to rebush the primary shaft to get the transfer ports to be equally exposed in both barrels to eliminate a low speed surge.

Re: Carb rebuilder
Eric Jackson at Vintagemusclecarparts.com has my vote. He's done two of my carbs in the past two years. Great work, fast turn around, and a fair price.- Top
