My clutch pulley assembly are rusted together and I cannot get them to release. Tried PB blaster, some heat, tapping the pulleys... No seperation, Any ideas to fix it before I grind the stake off and disassemble... How do you weld the male wiper shaft back on the drive shaft? Braze?

Dino, To get the pulleys apart, you may also have to grind the staked end of the drive spline, as well as the pulley end. The rust has likely seized the internal spring and shaft so it won't move.
To reinstall the pulleys and drive splines, I stake the ends of the remaining shaft protrusion. I don't think you can braze the steel shaft and the potmetal pieces successfully. You could also drill a small hole in the end pulley and shaft and insert a tiny split pin if you can't re-stake it firmly.

Many rebuilders do use a roll pin to secure the transmission assembly. Its a bit tricky to drill the hole in the right place though.
If you are trying to release the pawls by pushing down on the wiper arm shaft and it won't move it may well be rusted in the housing. My originals were so rusted that they were unusable....even though the pawls and springs were OK...- Top

As usual, Richard, the excellent links and photos you provided give me the confidence to take it apart tonight, a picture and a hydraulic press is worth a lot when restoring these old machines, I am looking forward to getting it fixed and after reading the thread that Mike Ernst has done a dozen of these, makes me want to meet this guy in person....a restoraholic....Dino Lanno- Top

I successfully disassembled the transmission tonight. Everything came apart easily and it looks in pretty good shape except the lower clutch had a broken boss on it. First dumb question, will things work with out the broken tab( see pic), second smarter question, anyone have a spare clutch lower, passenger side?Attached FilesDino Lanno- Top

Dino, That one is in nice shape. Good job.
That broken tab is just a clutch stop when winding the gear for installation on the car. May not be a problem as long as you don't overwind. One way you could repair is to flatten the broken area with a Dremel stone then size and drill a small hole for a small split pin. Tap in the pin with a dab of epoxy and then grind the end of the pin so it's height fits properly in the mating clutch gear. I would try that.
If not, and you want another, maybe give Jay Maxwell a jingle as he may have used bits from old trannys available.
A note on reassembly:
That steel encased bronze bushing, lower left area of your photo..... That should be a semi-hard press fit into the trans mast. If it's loose and spins in there it will cause the inner clutch to slip. That one needs to be stationary for the spring action to work to wind the unit up before installation. If so, take a pointed drift and punch some divots along the outer perimeter of the steel case. I do about 10 or so. This way when you press it back into the mast it'll stay put. I have a picture somewhere if I can find it I'll upload later.

Have a new problem to solve , the steel cage that is staked on to the shaft has come loose and one of the tabs broke, anyone have idea to repair it, staking it is no longer an option.Attached FilesDino Lanno- Top
