Wheel polishing secrets - 1978 Corvette Pace Car

Hi Gents, seeking your support and advice.

I have a 32k original mile '78 Pace Car which has light oxidation on the wheels. The wheels are original Kelsey Hayes slotted wheels with the "QC" stamp inside along with Made in Mexico. Pics below.

I was able to see moderate success in using the following process:

    1) Eagle 1 Self Etching cleaner and steel wool on inside of wheel to remove grime and face of wheel to remove what professionals call 'white rust' or oxidation

    2) Flitz Polish and/or Blue Magic Polish on the face of the wheel with either a battery powered or electric drill + polishing head. Head is a bit more cloth like and less Mother's Power Ball like.

Before and after pics are below. Don't get me wrong, the wheels look nice. I would like just a bit more polished look.

    Thanks,
    Dan

I would give Simichrome Polishing paste a try. Used it on my Harley's engine and trans cases for years...works like magic.

Does your metal polish instantly turn black as you are polishing? If not, you are still polishing the clear coat on the wheel. Many people confuse a failing clear coat with oxidized aluminum. If the clear coat is not peeling and cracked, you can improve the look greatly (just like you would paint) with paint polish and wax. To properly polish the aluminum, you will have to remove the clear coat. I stripped a set with Captain Lee's once with great results. Chip.

I have four Pace Car wheels I need to do as well so have watched forum posts. I also have an anniversary car with YJ8s that I have attended to for some twenty years. I've come to the conclusion it is more about the process than the product. Many polishers like Mother's Mag Wheel while others call for White Diamond. I have used both Semichrome and Never dull.

But in terms of process...check out this video at Gord's product...note the process. It is quite mechanical and I believe it is more about the mechanical process than product. I would follow this process on the Pace Car wheels. When I go to Carlisle next week...I'll be hunting up supplies.
