    65 welded exhaust installation question

I'm working on installing the stock 2.5 exhaust that needs to be welded. I'm told that if I tack weld the muffler to the intermediate pipe, I can remove it as an assembly and then finish welding 360 degrees. Then reinstall. Before I jump, I noticed the pipe and muffler will have to slide back 6 inches to clear and drop behind the transmission crossmember. It doesn't seem the muffler can slide back that far with the apron on the rear. If I remove the exhaust bezel, it might work. The mufflers are slid on as far as they should. Removing the spare tire tub may help with some wiggle room!? I would love to hear from someone who may have actually done this and share any tricks . The exhaust is a Gardner Exhaust that is very well done. The other possibility is to weld it in the car but I'm not excited about that.... Corvette Central sells the system already welded and a friend installed it with no issues that I know of but again, I thought I would give a shout out to those who have done this type of install before for some wisdom.... Thanks Tim

I installed the Corvette Central welded system in my 63. It installed with no problems but I believe I had the exhaust panel off so no issue with room to work. On the few occasions I have had to drop it to work on something I had to remove the exhaust panel.

The 1964-67 N-11 "off-road" mufflers were SERVICED as an assembly of intermediate pipe and muffler. If you had one of those assemblies, you would have to install it as an assembly. What you are doing is, essentially, creating the same thing. So, if an N-11 assembly could be installed, your assembly can be installed.

By the way, in case you're wondering, the external configuration (except for stampings) of the N-11 system is identical to the standard exhaust system.

Thanks , I installed everything yesterday and meticulously got all lined up and ready to weld. I elected to use a set of 2.5 inch clamps to clamp the mufflers in position on the middle pipes. This also allowed me to adjust middle pipes so they were even and parallel. By clamping I could still adjust mufflers so everything looked even and centered. Now that it is all clamped, I'll see how it drops out of there for welding and re-installing. After playing (ha) with it for 3 hours, I'm convinced that depending on how far the muffler is slid on the middle pipe , might clear or not clear the rear valance. I know the CC pre welded system goes on so I agree, no reason not to be able to install this system welded in one piece. Thanks again and I'll keep you posted. Tim
