1966 Horizontal Ignition Shield Exhaust Manifold L-Bracket Spacing ?

    Archives has no data.....

Can you measure between mount holes for wing-screws on all 4 shields? I'm putting L-brackets on manifolds but need the mount distances so when I get the shields later I won't have to readjust L-brackets after a body drop. I'm doing this on a rolling chassis with plenty of room now.

Pages 370/371 in Nolands' C2 book has the prints. I calculated LF shield(3880995) spacing at 3.56", and the LR(3880997) at 3.6",

I can't figure out how to extract the spacing from the prints on the RF(3880996) or RR(3880998). Fine print hard to read also.

    Thanks,
    Rich

Hi Rich, I think you can leave the two exhaust bolts loose for the brackets on each side and then install wing nuts and then tighten manifold bolts, this way you can get some movement for positioning.

Edward, Thanks......Normally I'd do that but I will never have the shields here. This is for a future installation after I run the engine so I need the bolts tight.

It's okay, you gave it a "bump".

I made a small distance piece/jig at 3-5/8" o/c out of a thin piece of hardwood. Drilled two holes slightly under size, then kind of force threaded a couple 1/4-20 nylon machine screws through the holes. Putting this 'fixture' in place, one can hold the center-to-center distance while tightening the exhaust manifold bolts. They still try to move with the torque, but it's better than constantly chasing. See pic below.

Jeff, great idea. 3 5/8" is about what I came up with for all 4 so that's what I used. Thanks for confirming that.

                Richard,
One of the tricks I have used on my '69 is to cut the heads off the appropriate size bolts (or cut threaded rod) and screw the studs slightly into the brackets before tightening the manifold bolts. Then use wing nuts to hold the shielding in place. Tighten the manifold bolts and remove one stud at a time replacing with the wing bolts. With A/C and AIR it helps on most locations except under the A/C compressor. There I just leave the studs and modified original style wing bolt. Works for me.

Try to keep the front/rear "L" brackets plumb and the "joggle" bracket's bend-line horizontal while tightening the manifold bolts. A little anti-seize on all the stuff surfaces under the "L" brackets will help keep the French locks from twisting/deforming.
