    1970 lt1 starter?

    Hello,

Looking to replace the starter with the correct cast number. I'm just unsure what that number is. I have a 1970 lt1, June '70 build. From what I can determine its either an 8338 or 8418. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Wes

GM #1108338 is the original starter for your application.

Joe's answer is exactly what is in the 1970-72 TIM&JG. You might want to order one from the NCRS store. You will find a lot more interesting information about your LT1 in there.

FWIW: My original 70 LT1(VO527CTB) in my Camaro Z28-(M21) has starter #1108418 (0E13). Not sure why
there is a difference between the Corvette/Camaro?? Larry

            Larry------

There are many reasons why there could be a difference between Corvette and Camaro for what would otherwise seem like identical applications.

Joe:The 1108338 is a "standard" torque starter; the 1108418 is a "high torque" starter. Hard to believe that
Chevrolet would put that type of starter on their Corvette LT1 and give the Camaro LT1 the better starter.
I guess anything is possible. Larry

My 70 LT-1 #14803 built on July 8th has a #418 starter. The starter has a July 3 date. Which works as the starters were installed in St. Louis. I believe that starters began to change from #338 to #418 in late 1970 production although others may have a different opinion. When this car went through Bowtie and Flight judging it was determined that the starter was original and correct to the car. I have no reason to believe the starter was ever changed as it is a 13,000 original mile car. This discussion has been had other times in the past. Maybe we can stir it up again to see where the #418 starters may have began or more likely there was a running change.

Mark, that is the correct application and # - 1969-1970 solid lifter, 4 speed. I surmise the use of the 1108418 starter in the LT1 Vette is similar to that of the 1108430 starter for the high-torque automatic which is noted as "unconfirmed use in Corvette" in the NCRS travel size manual for mechanical components. The 418 and 430 have very sparing confirmed sightings in Corvettes. They are truly passenger car applications.

My January built 1970 LT1 has a 1108338 starter, and I can assure you it is the one that was installed in St Louis.
I think Dave Strickland has the right idea.

My 70 LT-1 build date July 3 has a 1108400 starter. I bought the car 44 years ago with 8,000 miles on it and I think the starter is original. I will check the starter date on Wednesday.

Patrick, interesting! I'm not claiming this starter was not originally installed on your Corvette from the factory but the 1108400 is typically a big block starter?

My LT1 is just a little bit earlier than yours (June 1970 build) and was originally outfitted with a 1108338 too. What is the date on your starter? That could shed some light on its originality.

The GM #1108338. 1108400, and the 1108418 are all, with respect to "installability", functionally interchangeable. So, there's no reason that the factory could not have installed an 1108400 in place of an 1108338 or 1108418. As a matter of fact, I have not figured out (yet) what the difference is between the 1108418 and 1108400.
