3x2 Fuel Line Assembly Best Practices or Other Suggestions

    Hi everyone,

I've had lots of problems in the past trying to get a dual feed holley not to leak and now I'm about to embark on hooking up my tri-power. On the 4 barrel carb the issue I've had is trying to get a 1" wrench onto the inlet nut so it doesn't turn while I'm trying to get a flare nut wrench on to the line at the inlet such that it can be tightened. I've modified an old 1" wrench by grinding it down some on the back side and that has helped but it just seems like there should be some "special" tools available to do this job. My flare nut wrench, a Craftsman, is so wide that by the time I get it on the nut there's no room to tighten. Perhaps someone uses a different brand that works well? With the tri-power it would also make sense that there's a best order or approach to assembling the lines and blocks as well as fitting the carbs themselves to the intake. The lines were leaking before I took them off and it was just about impossible to tighten them with all the carbs in place. I figure there are those of you out there that have done this many times and could share some "best practices" or "tricks of the trade" if you will in getting a tri-power assembled with the engine in the car. I've seen some beautiful set-ups out there so I know it can be done :-).

To make matters worse it's an Air car and does have the solenoid which I have to work around too.

    Thanks,

    Jack

Jack, Holley makes a fuel inlet fitting that has the 1" hex and then a 5/8" set of flats where the line screws into the hex. They are not original but sure make your job easier. Another thing that helps me on those steel lines is to back off the steel line nut a little and install a couple wraps of Teflon tape onto the steel line about where the flare starts, then slide the steel line nut over the tape. The application of the tape will make the nut tighten easier because of the slide factor. There is not to be any tape on the steel line nuts threads.

Jack, I use these in all the connections . Less force better seal no leaks. Copper flare gasket.

John, thanks for that flare gasket tip, I used them recently on my 3x2 restoration. They worked great. No more tightening the hell out of flare fittings to get them to not leak. I also used anti-seize on all the threads and flare tubing seats. Barely needed a wrench at all.

For any fuel lines/fittings I use Loctite 545 hydraulic sealant. Shake the container. Put it on with a Q-tip. Miracle stuff. I wipe the excess off with Q-tips. A little bit goes a long way. Let it set up and no leak.
No point deduction like there is with white tape or white paste. John
