Another Rally Wheel Paint Question (1972)

    Hi all.

I think I've been through every post on every forum and I still have trouble figuring out the best black to use on the back side. There's talk of semi gloss and semi flat sometimes in the same sentence. I'm hoping for some direction from the experts. Krylon industrial 1613 was mentioned by a respected member which is semi flat but I also find comments about gloss semi gloss, etc. Any help would be appreciated. based on the technical judging guide stating "semi-flat" I ordered semi-flat from Quanta but don't want to use it until I'm sure. The manufacturer did not have data on the 72.

    Thanks in advance.

    Anthony

    Hi Anthony,
I believe the "semi-flat black" description for the paint on the inside of the rally wheels has continued into the new Edition of the 70-72 TIM&JG.

Anthony, I agree that its a semi flat black. there are like you say so many different shades and gloss levels in black, during the judging I think that John Ballard has more of a look at the silver color than the black on the back side of wheel. The good thing is that 72 the outside wheel was a true silver, rather that the silver with the Green hue in 70/71.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the help. Hopefully by the weekend I'll have krylon 1613 and quanta semi flat to experiment with. I'll choose one based on what the black under the wheels looked like.

Be sure you get the commercial (industrial) Krylon 1613 or it won't be right.

Yes. Definitely Alan was a great help with that one.

              Hi,
              Whoa!
I don't know that the Krylon 1613 is "right".
It's a good choice from the spray-can paints available today for someone trying to mimic the finish that was on the wheels originally.
              Regards,

Alan. I agree. Based on all the feedback, should be close enough if the sheen is OK. Whatever that means in trying to match paint that was done 40+ years ago I don't know but if I get a nice finish I'll be happy.

It's relatively easy for a body shop to spray them with a semi-flat or eggshell black and get the right look. It will be tougher to get a satisfactory look with a spray can.

If you know anyone who powder coats, it can be done and have a tougher finish. The back side of the wheel is rarely seen or judged; the front color and application is where the details lie.
