C2 Blower and Evaporator Assembly Removal

Can I remove the Blower-Evaporator assembly from my 63 with the engine in? With the valves on and blower motor in?

I would say no if the car is still on the frame. Yes if off. This is the process I think will work for you. You will need to remove the STV unit, then remove the half which houses the evaporator core, then the whole unit should come out. You will need to remove the expansion tank, all the hoses, anything else, that my hinder in the removal. All the ones I have dealt with the body has been off the frame. Dr. Rebuild has the best seal kit to rebuild the unit with. You may have to work underneath the car for better access.

Yes you can as I have done it. It is not easy or fun but it can be done. Don H.

Agree with the above. Recently did it on my 65 L-76. It was tight but when you strip everything off the evaporator case you can maneuver it off. Outer screws that hold the e case to the firewall have to be removed from below. Originally thought I would have to remove the exh, manifolds but didn't have too.

Re: C2 Blower and Evaporator Assembly Removal

Thanks everyone for the replies. You know I would really like to put the complete unit on the bench and totally inspect it before disassembly and restoration. BUT I will remove all the valves if I must. I do not want to damage anything in the process. I do believe 63 ac units are hard to replace. If I remove the exhaust manifold will it give enough clearance? Any more suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Craig

                Craig,

Exhaust manifold removal is not necessary. Just undo and remove the expansion valve and STV valve and the hoses, it all comes out after splitting the evaporator case first. Its a lot easier than you might think. If you have a service manual for 63-7 there is a detailed procedure for its removal. It works.
