    1980 torque converter problem

After we installed the engine and transmission back into our 1980, I noticed that the torque converter was sitting tight to the flex plate. I thought that we installed the torque converter properly because I felt the 2nd push after rotating the torque converter, but I am guessing I didn't catch the notches for the oil pump?

Do we have to remove the engine and transmission from the car to fix this problem or is there a trick I can try. I thought of rotating the flex plate with a pry bar to see it the torque converter will go into place on its own.

    Thanks
    Danny

    Danny,
You just have to unbolt the trans bolts and stab the converter again. Losten enough for you to spin the converter and feel it go in the front pump.

Forgot to say move trans back about 1/4" after bolts are loose.

Thanks Dom, should I support the engine or will the engine mounts hold it up?

Dan, what ever you do not bolt the engine up until the torque convertor is seated properly, if you have something to support the engine and put a couple of extra long 3/8 bolts (3") on the bottom two of bell housing and then unbolt the rear trans. mount and slide back a few inch's this will let you turn and try to engage torque convertor. it's common to break the ears of the pump of damage the pump if not properly engaged.

          Danny,
Yes the engine should be supported as the trans mount holds the back of the engine up. you can put a pad under the pan and hold it in position. Also the trans will need to be supported. Once the torque converter is in place and the trans is bolted back on, the torque converter should turn and not be held against the fly wheel (flex plate) so you can get the 3 bolts in place.

Thanks Dom and Ed, engine and trans is supported, installed the 3" bolts and got all the other bolts loosened except the one that has the trans dip stick attached. Its a little to tight for my fat fingers. Waiting for my skinny buddy to come over to help. I will let you know as soon as I get it fixed. Once again thanks a lot.

Skinny friend came over and got the 6th bolt lose. Turn the torque converter a 1/4 turn and it stabbed right in. Tighten everything back up to spec, removed the jacks under the oil pan and trans - good to go.

Thanks Dom and Ed for everything, your tips were a big help.

              Regards
              Danny
