    67 Black Paint

I was at a car show last week with a friend that has owned a body shop for many years. We were looking at a black 67 Corvette Convertible. It was supposed to have original paint and a photocopy of the tank sticker was displayed showing the original black.
Under the black finish coat some patches of red oxide color could be seen. My friend did not think that was original primer. The owner was not around to ask any questions. What color was the primer used for a 67 black finish?

Red Oxide was the only color primer used, regardless of color coat.

Not the whole story. The red oxide was followed by a gray primer then the finish paint was applied.

But most of the gray was sanded off prior to paint.

Rear wheel well view of the original red primer on a Tuxedo black '67 after I cleaned the underbody area. There were 2 layers of black paint on this area. The top layer from a lacquer repaint about 20 years prior, and under that was the original black lacquer overspray.
