    Thanks,

    Re: Wheels & tires

I have used P205/75R15 tires on my 1966 with the original 15" X 5.5" steel wheels for many years. My 1998 S10 with 15" X 7" wheels came with the same size tire. The knockoff wheels are 15" X 6" so........yes.

Drove the 64 over 5000 miles to three Regionals and the San Jose National, one dust storm and 40 lbs of bugs!

Excellent, Thanks to all for the prompt responses. Trying to warm up to the stock wheels, but it's just not happening. Haven't taken possession of the car yet, another couple of weeks.

          Appreciate the positive answers.

205/65 and 215/70 are closest to OE revs/mile...205/70 are more and 215/75 are less, so they will result in greater speedometer error... 215/70s look better, especially on KOs, rarely cause any fender interference, and there are still a few out there that are H-rated, which means they have a spiral wound nylon cap belt that will keep the tire from disintegrating in the event of an internal structural failure.

I consider this a mandatory safety feature for all of my cars.

              Duke,
which H rated tires are you referring to? In the 215/70 size?

                Hi George,
I am interested in the feedback you get on this one. I have been thinking about these Goodyears for my 65.

                Thank you,
                George

Tire availability is a moving target. Try a Google search on the size and on the big tire retailer websites. If you haven't heard of them look at tires-easy.com.

You will likely find at least one or two H-rated 215/70R15s, but they are likely brand names that you have never heard of, likely manufactured in Asia.

I'm looking for a set of summer high performance H-rated 205/60R-15s for my '88 MBZ 190E 2.6. This size is also getting somewhat scarce. There are a few H-rated, but they are "all-season" type with wear ratings in excess of 500, which means they have very hard compounds and lots of siping in the thread design that helps with snow traction, but makes the tread blocks less rigid. I don't care about snow, so I prefer a summer high performance type with a lower wear rating and large rigid tread blocks without siping that offers better dry and wet grip in mild to high ambient temperatures. I also prefer a traditional non-unidirectional tread design for a vintage car over the modern "V-tread" designs that are showing up on more new designs.

I found that Vredestein (a small, but long time tire manufacturer in Holland) offers what I am looking for in this size - Sportrac 5 - a summer high performance tire with a wear rating of 300, non-directional tread design with large, rigid tread blocks, and no siping. They are listed on the tires-easy.com web site, priced at well under $100 per tire, but are out of stock.

They also meet my preference to run European brand tires on European cars, American brands on American cars, and Japanese brands on Japanese cars.

                  Duke

Actually that Vredestein is a pretty good looking tire, I don't need or want an all season tire either, but as you said our choices are dwindling rapidly. I will keep looking.
