    Carter 3461S Carburetor Installation

    Hello everyone,

I will be installing a Carter 3461S AFB carburetor on my 1963 that has a 300hp engine. It currently has a Carter WCFB which is the wrong one.
Could anyone supply any pictures, instructions or a possible web site that would help with the proper installation of the new AFB carburetor especially the proper way the vacuum lines are hooked up and ran. There seems to be some differences between the way the vacuum lines for the WCFB and the AFB are hooked up. There looks or seems to be three ports for vacuum on the new AFB, one on the front base that has threads to screw in, one on the rear base with threads to screw in, and one on the rear top rim that is a male port for a hose to slide on. My car does have a power brake booster.

    Thanks for your help,
    Kenneth

Uh...the front hole is for the vacuum advance "hard line" that transitions to a rubber hose before it enters the vacuum can on the distributor.
The hose on the rear top rim is a fresh air hose and not a vacuum hose; it transitions to a hard line as it goes down to the exhaust manifold.
The one on the rear is for vacuum accessories (Power Brakes) and the PCV valve. There is a brass block that screws into the carb to mount the PCV valve....one adapter is for a car with power brakes another version for cars without power brakes.

All three lines are show in the picture. (Ignore the Edelbrock manifold the hose plumbing is the same for a stock manifold).

One big challenge is getting the GF-90 fuel filter properly plumbed.
Long Island Corvette has all the lines and bracket to do that..

      Frank,

Thanks for the reply! The picture is a big help also. The fuel filter, GF-90, is in place already. The one thing that worries me is the line from the filter to the carburetor, will the existing line work or will I need to replace it due to it being too short or too long.

      Thanks again,
      Kenneth

I'm not sure -- the stock WCFB had an internal "sintered" filter in the fuel inlet fitting -- nothing else. If you somehow had the GF-90 on the car WITH the WCFB WITH the right hard line it should still work with the AFB. If not you'll need to get the right hard line and observe in the picture how that line is installed. If you get it flipped around the angles don't work out and you'll have problems...

You'll also need to attach the throttle linkage properly. On an AFB the upper hook on the carb return spring actually goes through the hole in the linkage and secures the linkage rod to the carb. I know, a weird deal, but that's how it is...

Make sure you use the correct intake-to-manifold gasket setup. I believe there is a baffle plate which is very important and wasn't used on the WCFB setup: http://www.chicagocorvette.net/item....m=7051&rc=1433

This 300 HP Powerglide 63 coupe had a repro AFB and I got the correct 3160 for it years ago. The original filter to carb line was still there so I used that. Iy had aftermarket AC but these pics may help.....

Rich's pictures are better and show the carb linkage setup as well as the PCV attachment at rear of carb (PB car though)..

              Richard,

Thanks for the pictures. All the different views and angles. They're great and will be a big help.

              Tanks again,
              Kenneth
