    Power windows slow

Working on a 1977 for a friend . Both windows are super slow going up . I plan on lubing everything .but the motors seam slow so we are planning on getting new motors . Are there any motors available out there that run faster ( have more torque ) ???

    Re: Power windows slow

I found that my original motor were a lot faster than the replacement one I installed in my 71. So, I would not guarantee that a replacement would be any better.

Good electrical contacts are of utmost importance, but I suspect you know that.

The original motors can be rebuilt. Having that done by an experienced rebuilder might be your best bet in this case.

        Paul,
I have rebuilt the motors with the same results (slow) until I adjusted the tracks and lubed them. The commutator will get dirty with carbon from the brushes and slow the travel. I would first adjust the windows and see if that does it.

My 72's Drivers side window dropped into the door when the bushings broke. They were original and the window was slow. I pulled the entire thing apart, cleaned and painted the parts, lubed the motor gear and tracks, installed all new plastic parts. It works as fast as a new car now. I didn't go into the motor and didn't need to. Now I have to get the passenger side done when I have the time.

If you need a rebuilder for the motors I recommend Joe Ray, who post on this forum.

Gary, another factor on corvette power window regulators is the spring is wound as such to let the window go down faster than up. lubing the tracks up may help some. removing the motors and greasing the gears and shaft will also help.

If removing the motors be sure to read the service manual. Just taking the motors off while under pressure will get you hurt big time. You also could try cleaning the old grease from the motor gears and replacing with new grease.

Joe Ray would be my first choice also.

Do they move up and down faster with the engine running?

In the mid 1970's Bill Bixby was in a TV show called the Magician. He drove a white 1973 Coupe, I think later a 1974. I recalled the opening of the show showed how zippy fast the C3 power windows went down when new.

I managed to find an old video showing how fast the window should move. Sorry the video quality isn't so great.

I have 2 C3's and they run super fast up and down, power seats, door locks... lights all perfect. I cleaned all electrical contacts including switches with www.caig.com DEOXIT D5 and FINISHED with PRO GOLD! carefully. blast the switches with air first.. CLEAN DRY air! hit with DEOXIT D5 work it with NO POWER TO THE SWITCH ( pull the battery neg! ) then blast with clean air.... hit again with D5, air, finish with shot of PRO GOLD and bam! I would do this on all contacts in a vette! even grounds... why this stuff works! its the only thing Exxon Mobile uses on gas pump contacts. keeps the out door contacts clean!... and from arcing can you say BOOM! I have proven on a newer car that if all the WETPACK connectors and any wire connector is done the car will IDLE SMOOTHER it is a noticeable fix! To go one step further you can take a PC CPU chip out spray its socket leave it WET, power on do a speed test and it will clock faster... Just a word of caution the propellent is flammable if you order it that way the actual cleaner is not... so bet to spray no power, wait and blast off with clean air!
enjoy... I do stereo repair its the BEST STUFF for contacts switches pots... etc... check the web site out, no plug its just great stuff!
