69 seats

I found the correct seats for the 69 and have a question. Does the inboard track, not the one with the handle suppose to lock? I don't see any way that it can. Are there missing parts?

The non-adjustable track does not lock.

Ok, thanks Joe. I worked for Lear Seating (tier 1 supplier to GM Janesville) for 17 years and never saw that before.

Also keep in mind that 1969 seats are identical for either side. So, the "locking" rail is outboard on one side and inboard on the other side. The same holds true for the seatback lock. This situation also allows "rotating" the seats from side-to-side to even out wear. This is something I recommend if the car is driven a lot (since it will usually have only the driver seat occupied).

Easy with a convertible, not so easy with a coupe. Those shoulder belts make removing and swapping quite the chore.

That would explain why I was going crazy today putting the tracts on. I thought I bought 2 drivers seats. The first smart thing I found GM did with the seats. I still can't believe both tracks don't lock. I did put the top down and was much easier to do as Patrick stated. Tks

I saw only 1 seat had the shoulder belt crome holder on top of the back. It's on the door side of the seat now. How did that work if you switch the seats?

My point is that you can't. The back has to stay on the same side, so you'd have to remove the back from the bottom, and rotate bottoms only. That's too much like work.

I agree, are the headrest suppose to pull straight up and remove with a lever to release them? I see there is a hook like design at the bottom.

The headrests pull straight up and rotated slightly to remove. Very easy. And unlike what my good friend Patrick says, changing the seats is quite simple even with a coupe (of course if you remove the T-tops it is more accessible). The shoulder belt in '69 slips right out of the chrome bracket under the headrest and the seat back is held to the bottom by 2 bolts/screws. Here's another tip- run a nut onto the seat back fastener screws from the inside after assembly. Over the years my seat back screws would work themselves out as the seat back was rotated forward and back. To reattach, the seat had to be removed (at least for me it had to be) so this extra nut has prevented this. Just a thought. Good luck with your '69!

Yes, I dealt with this problem for years with it sometimes occurring at the absolute most inopportune times.

The original seat back hinge screws had a nylon insert to serve as a thread locking device. It was of limited effectiveness, though, and became even less effective as time went on. Later GM replacement screws were of a somewhat different configuration and did not have the "nylock" feature.

Ah, yes. I have my head stuck in 70-72 land.
No switching those without a lot of work. I forgot about the different 69 configuration.
