    1961 gas tank cover

Are the screws and washers holding the gas tank cover down, painted the same color as the soft top cavity or are they unpainted? Thanks.

I'll reply just to keep this at the top till someone with more knowledge can answer. It would be my guess that they were painted, can't imagine that they painted it separate from the car then installed it. Hope one of the master judges chimes in for ya

Unpainted. What's interesting is that the gas tank was not painted, and the area the tank sits in was also generally unpainted. Yet the cover mounting screws were unpainted. And the gas door lid was in place, the rubber bumper in place, the vent hose and small grommet were in and painted, and rubber neck grommet was often painted but the filler neck not. Also, the straps were not. Yet the "shelf" on which the tank cover sits was painted. I'm sure the filler neck was installed after paint, as well as the tank. So they would not have put all the screws in for paint, only to have to take them back off to remove the cover to put the tank and neck in. But, did the cover get painted separately? I don't know that answer. I'm guessing that it could have, because the felt had to be applied after paint.

Mike: Before I posted the original query and your reply, I had looked at the judging manual (fifth edition) and found reference to the cover being held in place by Phillips head screws, but no reference to finish. Then, after I'd made this post and after I had received the new judging manual (sixth edition) around the time of Bloomington, I thought I'd check the new manual and lo, now there's a reference to the fact that "most fasteners were painted body color, but some have been observed with unpainted cadmium plating." So, it looks like it could go either way. But two things I'd like to comment on....Thanks to you and Terry for responding to a rather unimportant question on this board, in light of all I read here, and the folks who worked on the new 1961-1962 Technical Information Manual and Judging Guide have, in my estimation, done a really wonderful job.
