After reading a number of posts about rear leaf springs, as I am thinking about rebuilding the current spring on my '66 Big Block (it has an Eaton spring) I remembered I have the spring I took off the '66 about ten+ years ago stored in a shed, so I took a look at it last night. After looking at how the ends are cut its a GM spring, however, I could not find a part number on the spring. Do you have to disassemble the spring to locate the part number? Thanks for the feedback

Not certain you will find a part number. However, many originals had a GM or similar mfg logo (GLS) on the thin sides of some of the leaves. You can count the number of leaves and also measure their dimensions and thickness and compare to info in the archives. Gary Beaupre wrote a few articles for the Restorer regarding the rear suspension. I seem to remember that the part number was stenciled on the bottom using a gray paint. Probably long gone as it was exposed to the elements.
This stencil was on NORS springs from GM so not sure about production springs.

I know of no part number ever found on original springs. There were only 2 rear springs at St. Louis at any given time during all of the C2 years and most of the C3 years. So, I really don't think a part number would have even been necessary for assembly line worker identification. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
