Re: 63 Split Window article sent to me
No mention of Peter Brock's role in designing the Sting Ray?
"While attending Art Center School (Art Center College of Design), Brock at the age of 19 became the youngest designer ever hired by General Motors' design department, GM Styling. In November 1957, Brock drew the sketch which GM VP of Design Bill Mitchell picked to become the design of the next Corvette, the Corvette Stingray. As GM had made a commitment to not engage in racing (known as the AMA ban) Brock worked with Mitchell in 1958 in one of the design studios, creating the prototype of the Stingray racer. The production car was renamed the Sting Ray[1] and was released in 1963, almost 4 years after Brock had left GM."Big Tanks In the High Mountains of New Mexico- Top

Re: 63 Split Window article sent to me
Thanks very much Gene, Years ago I read that when Duntov took the new split window for a ride he said the split has just got to go. And so it did.
I was a student at the GM training center outside of Pittsburgh in '61 and '62. Sponsored by Grabiak Chevrolet in the old days.
Took the United Delco Courses. Next door was the Chevrolet classroom. The summer of '62 there was a silver '63 with blackwalls & silver rims up on the lift in the class room. The guys in my class were in awe. But we were not allowed in the classroom.
Well there wasn't any security cameras. So lunch time three of use went in to see the new Corvette while two guys guarded the door and the hall.
Was so thrilling seeing the new split window. We compared it to a VW because of the wheels hanging down on the lift like one.
No it was not a fuel car. Thanks again, John
My ex father in law lived next door to Larry Shinado. (SP)- Top

Re: 63 Split Window article sent to me
Zora was nobody's fool; he predicted the stylized split would be several inches wide by the time it was properly engineered and trimmed out and he was spot on the money....although his disdain for the split from a safety standpoint seemed over zealous. Plenty of cars had split rear windows over the decades....
Brock's initiation into the corporate world (if true) was interesting when his boss basically hid his drawings trying to take things in a different direction; but Mitchell remembered the drawing and asked where it was....(according to the story)...- Top
