    C2 fender side emblem holes

While working on my 66 convertible I noticed the holes for the RH fender emblem are 1/2 more forward (towards the front of the car). The car is stripped to bare glass and those are the original holes, I checked the AIM no mention but it does state to cut off the rear most stud after nut install on the RH fender emblem for heater box clearance. I also checked out a 63 coupe and it has it's RH fender emblem more forward also, anyone else noticed this?

I wonder if this was done to provide more clearance for the heater box?

      Brian,
On EARLY 65 AO Smith bodies, it has been observed that the side emblem is centered over the first and second gille, as opposed to the intended location (centered over the middle gille). At this point, one guess is that AO Smith in the beginning of 65 production, continued to use the 64 template to drill the holes. This is referred to in the new 65 JG. That anomaly so far has not surfaced on ST Louis cars.
If indeed all your body panels are factory installations, it may just be a fluke. (Assuming that no one installed a replacement fender from an early 65). Hope this helps,
      Marco

Thanks Marco, I didn't know any of the info you provided. I'm going to start looking at 63 -66 emblem locations, just looking at 2 cars so far and both have the RH emblem further forward. My car is AO smith body but March 4th 1966 production date (not the body build date) I also have the 2nd version rad support. Yes the fiberglass panels are original, cant mistaken factory boding seams in bare glass

Brian, If your RH emblem is 2" further forward it would be centered on the area between the first and second gill. See attached photo. Measuring from the edge of the door, my RH emblem is 1/4" further forward than the LH side. This is a 65 AO Smith body.

1965 AO Smith body built April 65. Original panels with original emblem placement.

Thanks to both Jim's for pictures and the help (I never noticed the emblems lined up with the center gill). I just ran down to the garage with an emblem and it does sit above the middle gill on both sides, I never tried an emblem since I'm prepping the body for paint and just happened to measure the holes on the fenders out of curiosity. Hard to believe the holes on the RH side are 1/2 more forward than the LH but still line up with the middle gill on both sides, I guess one of the lower panels must have been glued on at the factory more forward or back (LH) and the holes on the upper surround where drilled to match the GM requirement of center gill line up. I just goes to show ya that tape measure's don't always hold the key.
