Hello All, I had my '66 out this morning for a drive and finding it more difficult shifting into 1st, 2nd gear, also has tendency to grind when shifting into reverse. The transmission was rebuilt about 15 years ago. Reviewed the archives and it sounds like this may be a clutch related issue, thanks for the feedback.

John, if the pedal is releasing closer off the floor you may need to adjust the free play out.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

John always go into second gear before going into reverse as that stops the gear from spinning thus you should not get any grinding. It's noted that way in the owners manual. Also check your alignment on your shift linkage.

Re: Hard Shifting Condition, C2
I had a similar problem with my 59 when it had a 4 speed in it. Originally a PG. Over the years I had several issues with slight grinding or difficulty putting it reserve. One mechanic told me me to put it onto 2 before reserve. When the car was hot, it was difficult to put in 1st as well. One day it gave out on an off ramp. It immediately shut it down and called the tow truck. As it turned out the 3 finger pressure plate tension bolt snapped and broke the finger and trashed the release bering. I was fortune in there was no other damage. A new pressure plate and release bearing, I was back on the road. I did notice that some of these parts are off shore now so be careful.- Top

Re: Hard Shifting Condition, C2
Reverse is a sliding spur gear, so shifting to any forward gear stops the countershaft from rotating, which stops the reverse gearset, and it should shift into reverse without grinding.
Nominal clutch freeplay is about 3/4", but check the CSM.
