    Transmission Fluid Level

I have a 1984 Corvette. With the car completely cold my transmission level is at the full HOT mark on the dipstick. From this I am assuming my transmission is over filled with fluid. Is this a logical assumption or do I need to check it according to the shop manual? For me anyway transmission fluid level seems to be difficult to establish. Thanks for any replies.

In my 46 year old 1970 the original automatic turbo 400's automatic transmission is only checked after driving. Full of fluid is measured at the full mark after driving.

Tom, are you checking the level with the car idling in park, Hot ,and on level ground?

From your description it sounds like the level is too high but the only way to know for sure is to check it as the the manufacturer specifies(hot, idling in park). Good Luck, Doug

I was checking the level without the engine running and with a cold engine. I know the correct way to check the fluid level. I was just curious if checking the fluid level with the engine not running and the engine cold is of any value in determining the actual fluid level. It just seems that if the level is already at the full HOT mark when the engine is cold it would be higher when the engine is at operating temp.
