If you would prefer a more automotive solution please view this link as an example of barrel nuts. Available from many sources. A Google search may help. They work well, are barely detectable and don't look so much like Bubba was there.

It's hard to tell from your photo.... but the screws should be pretty much flush with the top surface of the panel --- not sticking up ---

You could also use internal threaded pop-rivets. The are installed the same way as a standard pop-rivet but when the rod breaks off you have standard female threads to use. You would install them below the trim and the use an appropriate size and thread phillips head screw to match the thread of the pop-rivet.
