Hello all - Over the past few months, my fuel indicator has indicated less fuel than is actually in the tank. It is getting worse over time. With a full tank the gauge shows 3/4 at best and goes down from there showing close to empty when it has probably half a tank remaining. Thoughts or advice??

My guess would be that the the fuel level float has become "heavy". The float is a foam-like plastic material and can, over time and degradation of the sealer, absorb gasoline and become heavy. Therefore, it does not "float" as-designed. I don't think that GM ever offered the floats separately but they may be available in the aftermarket.
Of course, your problem could also be the result of a failing fuel gauge tank unit. That would necessitate a new unit.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Thanks, Joe. Since the sending unit will have to come out, new gasket, etc., any reason not to replace the whole thing?- Top

Replacing the entire assembly is probably the way to go. However, I understand that some of the replacement units available today are off-shore manufactured and inferior. The current GM replacement, GM #19480449, might be, too; I'm not sure. If you could find an NOS GM #6428164 that might be the best thing. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
