    69 Fuel Level Indication

Hello all - Over the past few months, my fuel indicator has indicated less fuel than is actually in the tank. It is getting worse over time. With a full tank the gauge shows 3/4 at best and goes down from there showing close to empty when it has probably half a tank remaining. Thoughts or advice??

My guess would be that the the fuel level float has become "heavy". The float is a foam-like plastic material and can, over time and degradation of the sealer, absorb gasoline and become heavy. Therefore, it does not "float" as-designed. I don't think that GM ever offered the floats separately but they may be available in the aftermarket.

Of course, your problem could also be the result of a failing fuel gauge tank unit. That would necessitate a new unit.

Thanks, Joe. Since the sending unit will have to come out, new gasket, etc., any reason not to replace the whole thing?

Replacing the entire assembly is probably the way to go. However, I understand that some of the replacement units available today are off-shore manufactured and inferior. The current GM replacement, GM #19480449, might be, too; I'm not sure. If you could find an NOS GM #6428164 that might be the best thing.

I find that the 19480449 is no longer available, anyway.
