Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63

I have been thinking about the names of the various welds. Not a welder although I have brazed a few messed up parts.
Page 111 in the 6th edition says the bracket was spot welded. Looking at the one one my 63 and the later one on my desk if asked by someone I would say they are spot welded. Just my own opinion. My buddy is a welder. When I see him this Sunday I will bring the bracket along and ask him what kind of weld it is.

You could call it a spot OF weld but it is not a spot weld.
Usually that shows up as a depressed circle (like a quarter panel or door skin on an old metal car).
I'd like to hear his response.

A spot weld, made by a spot welder is a resistance weld. Those welds, shown above, are arc welds of various sorts so it's a spot OF weld as Mr. Jorjorian says. The term, in this case, is misleading at best.

Generally, spot welds are not found on an edge, they are usually some distance from the edge. They are made by clamping two (or more) sandwiched panels with two different electrodes, found on opposite sides of the sandwich, hence the "spot" created by contact with the electrodes on each side...
