The 63/64 judging manual states the lower brace(bracket) is spot welded. not stitch welded, is this correct? All the one's I have seen are stitch welded.

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
Hi Edward,
Funny, I just read this very same thing in the judging guide last night because I had sandblasted and painted mine. I'm in the same boat as you. Mine is stitch welded twice on both sides each about 3/4" long. I wonder if that's what they meant in that it isn't stitch welded down the whole seam?
Aloha,

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
Irby, I am thinking its a era in the manual. mine is exactly as yours. it has two stitch welds on each side. How about some of you other 63 guys take a look at your brackets?? It maybe the same on 64's??New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Either the guy in charge doesn't know welding terms or he has another error in his manual.
How about you letting the 63-64 TL know you've found another error??

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
Enclosed are 3 photos of an original (re-painted) 3825460 63-E64 Alternator bracket (without AC). It looks like spot welds to me.
Years ago I had a NOS L64-65 Alternator bracket, GM # 3860461, that had "stitch welds" along the top and bottom. The difference is the location of the 1/4" treaded hole (as shown in my drawing) and probably the types of welds. I also had a few used 3860461 L64-65 brackets but I don't remember how they were welded.

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
The original bracket on my '63 is spot welded.
My later '64-'65 bracket is spot welded. Just like Dave's.
Nice pics and drawing Dave. Thanks very much.
Those '63 and early '64 brackets are hard to find. Outside of the threaded hole the brackets appear to be identical.
What is the logo on the threaded bolt that holds the heater hoses to the bracket via the clamp/bracket?
As I recall it could be no logo or??? Forgot. Is it a self starting thread? JD- Top

You might want to look up the definition of SPOT WELD and resistance welding.

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
Bob J., I think your thinking as I am, a spot weld is different than say a tack weld, but I guess technically speaking it is a spot weld I guess.New England chapter member, 63 Convert. 327/340- Chapter/Regional/national Top Flight, 72 coupe- chapter and regional Top Flight.- Top

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
So then our '63 brackets are in fact not spot welded. Interesting. Either is the '64-65. Not spot welded.
Anyhow this why I don' get anything done in the shop. But this is more fun. Later, JD- Top

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
Here is mine on a Mar64 car. Note two holes! Perhaps it was during the transition period? Can only say it's the original as of
Aug 67. Original owner told me that the push rods had been replaced at one time, removed head? do not know but will ask when I see him at Nationals.Attached Files- Top

Re: Question on lower Alternater brace for 63
Alan, my March 19th car has the two holes, forward one isn't tapped. FWIW.
