Re: Move'n on up to a 1967 big block - Guidance Sought

From what I have seen in the past, when a car does not have the original engine the listing will say numbers match. If it were the real deal, they would have said so like it does for the color combo. Still a very rare and desirable car and with it not being a frame off NCRS car, its one that can be driven and enjoyed. I would make sure the tank sticker is there and can be verified along with checking the tags and the overall condition of the car. It's still a pretty good deal if the ad is accurate.

The wording and adjectives in the ad read EXACTLY like all the ads do from Proteam Corvette FYI....Literally word for word. This should be taken into consideration. tread cautiously. ARA

+1, and speaking from a voice of experience with that kind of description from that dealer........

And remember with that dealer, as Steve says, only "the real deal" wording get you the original engine.

Also realize that ten years ago, trim tags did not fall under the scrutiny they do now (read the trim tag book had just been published) and ten years ago the document validation service available to day did not exist. I would tread very cautiously.

Re: Move'n on up to a 1967 big block - Guidance Sought

                Edmund,
In 1971 I bought a wrecked 435 coupe with stock exhaust. I was a chevy mechanic in CA and the car came thru for repair but because it was only worth 1750.00 in good shape they decided not to fix it and it went off to JD Corvette in Paramont CA.
The service writer talked me into bying the car and so I did and had it towed back to the dealership where I pulled out the BB and headers. seemed that all I fixed on BB cars was their cam & lifter failures. First thing was Factory air while the engine was out since the 435 did not come with air. I did the body work and threw in a fresh 365HP SB along with a SB hood. Didn't want a BB to get the credit when I raced. The 365 kicked but with the stock 4:11 gears. Had to change the front springs so I wouldn't have to get dental work and had a blast with that SB. It actually beat BB's.
Wanted to drive it more so I changed the trans ratio and put a 3:36 in it and drove it for about 22K. At that point the Acrylic laquer did it's thing and I stripped the car with a razor blade and parked it for years.
Then, came the push from my friends to fix the original BB hood and put the BB back in. I decided to do a complete frame off and return the car to stock with exception of the A/C. Now I find myself defending the car as a 435, especially with the factory A/C I put in it. Haven't drove it yet with the BB but close.
Just before the frame off came about A wheeler dealer came from Utah took pictures and told me I needed to sell the car to him and that it was not a 435 because the A/C was not installed at a dealership by me but was done at the factory. He called about a dozen times and I tried to be nice and tell him that I was going to keep the car. Then I got a call from him and he said he was in Las Vegas with his trailer headed my way with 50K in a bag . That was it! told him to turn around and go home. I took the body off the frame that week.
I guess what I am saying is that it seems you always get challenged with a BB as to it's being a FAKE. My passion now is getting my 63 coupe done and stepping up the HP a bit and driving it with the 3:36.
The other side of the coin is that my BB came stock with a 4:11 and I would go to jail in a heart beat.

Dom, that story sort of reminds me why I am glad I am over lusting after '67 L71s, but I am not sure the new objects of my desire are any better.....

Ara, I'm glad to hear all is well with your family. I was getting concerned since you've been quiet lately. The Austin group is all looking forward to seeing you in Frisco. We have a transport full of '67 Big Blocks heading up there.

Looking forward to it, and seeing every one, but alas I also will not have a '67 BB, been there done that, glad I moved on too.
