    '63 Brake Drum Flat Spring

Am attempting to replace a previously broken flat spring on the the front brake drum of a '63 coupe. Short of manufacturing some kind of expander tool, are there any simpler and safer ways of expanding the spring over the outside of the drum. Thx

    Joe,

Many years ago (in the 70's) I restored a 64 that had a very rusted flat spring(s). I ordered and still have the springs (round) and never figured out a way to install the new replacement springs. Short of building some kind of expander or cone tapered contraption I don't have a clue.

You need to buy one of these Sears "lucky screwdrivers" to do this installation.

Still had the originals on my 64, removed, cleaned, put back on. Know in the past had removed and installed a few times. I do not recall any problems. Perhaps the replacements are a little shorter? perhaps!

I have installed these springs by placing the drum flat down on a sturdy workbench close to the edge. Lay the spring over the front end and clamp the drum to the bench. The spring should now be held captive by the c clamp. This will prevent the spring from flying away.

Using two large screwdrivers (don't recall the size but I am thinking they were close to 18") pry the spring over the opposite end of the drum and roll is down to the groove.

I have used this method numerous times and have never gotten hurt or caused any damage. In fact, the spring has slipped on every time without an issue. Just be careful.

I recall just connecting the ends and rolling them on with a couple of helpers using the tips of our fingers.

Thanks to all- What I needed to do was first secure to drum to the bench then secure the spring in the groove ( got that from the 'magic screwdriver u-tube) with a c- clamp and a set of welders vice grips. Then I was able roll the spring on with a 36" and 18" pinch bar (small spring or weak mechanic). Worked great - thanks again. Joe
