    Re: Lacquer Paint.

    Hi James,
The fellow who painted my car, (and allowed me to help a little), is pretty much a one person operation.
He's been restoring Chevy cars, and mostly Corvettes for about 35 years. He hasn't made the switch away from acrylic lacquer.
My car still had the original paint on it and was un-hit.
I helped strip the old paint off (there was incredibly little!) and then removed the 2 primer coats.
He sprayed the bare fiberglass with DP90 Catalyzed Epoxy Primer and DZ3 light gray primer.
He bought 7 quarts of color paint. There was about 1 quart left for me to keep.
It's been painted 11+ years now and as lacquer does continues to get prettier.
My car lives a VERY easy life so the paint hasn't suffered at all.
I remember it well the day I brought it home from the dealer and I think his paint job mimics very closely what it looked like.
    Maybe just a bit nicer!
    Regards,
    Alan

      Re: Lacquer Paint.

I was talking to a guy from Houston a couple of years ago. Don't remember his name, but he restores 54's. He uses a polyester primer called Rust Defender. He says it seals so well that nothing bleeds or pops back through. He says it also adds strength to the fiberglass. Works as a sub coat for any type of paint. He did say that after the polyester primer, he uses a lacquer primer before spraying the lacquer topcoat.

        Re: Lacquer Paint.

After many long discussions with a PPG rep I'm going back with the DP74 red oxide as a sealer and high build primer. He even took the time to come out and look at the car. I've ordered my 984 Daytona Yellow Lacquer PPG Duracryl from a paint store in Georgia. I watched a very interesting video on YouTube of a man in Oregon that painted a 63 split window the same way as I'm going to do mine and it's a Duntov award car.

          Hi James,
I bet you feel good that he was willing to take a look at your car in person!
I'll be interested to hear how things go!
          Good Luck!
          Regards,
          Alan
