I would like opinions please as to the effectiveness of the original foam air filters ( modern reproductions) and how they compare to the paper elements that are now available. Would like to use a repro unit in our car to keep it original but not if it does not do the job. Not talking K&N or other performance filters. Thank you, Duke

In my opinion, the paper elements are FAR superior to the original foam elements. Use the paper for driving and install the foam for judging. It's a pretty easy swap-out.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1965 L76 air filter (foam versus paper)
Joseph,
Go paper..... and.... if you haven't identified a particular brand or part # for a suitable (high quality) paper filter, allow me to save you the time of doing the research - particularly in the TB archives - and suggest the one that appears to be the most often recommended for you L76 application. Get a WIX brand, part # 42070. If you can't find that exact item, go to a NAPA store and ask for their paper filter, part # 2070. It is in fact a WIX 42070 filter. The NAPA part number is not similar to the WIX by coincidence. NAPA price is under $10 but it will likely not be in stock and they will charge you for shipping from their regional warehouse. I got one for my '64 L76.
FYI - this filter is about a 1/4 inch too tall for the OEM chrome air filter assembly. The chrome lid will stand proud just a bit but, no problem since the rubber gasket on both sides of the paper filter seals tightly against the filter assembly.Ed- Top

WIX is definitely the best in my opinion, too.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1965 L76 air filter (foam versus paper)
Joe,
I believe you are aware that WIX also makes a petty good oil filter too - the type that goes into the non-disposable canister found on early Chevy SBs. I use aWIX #51143 filter in my '64 L76. They produce (or market) the same filter for other vendors - the vendors use their own part # - but I don't have that info.Ed- Top

Re: 1965 L76 air filter (foam versus paper)
Thanks for the info Ed. I have a spin on now but am thinking of converting back to the original set-up. I never thought I would get caught up in this originality thing but I think I have. Thanks again , I appreciate your time. Duke- Top

I believe WIX makes the NAPA GOLD filter, WIX #51143 and NAPA# 1143, same filter.- Top
