82 oil fill neck (seal to valve cover)

I had to (or perhaps thought I had to) remove the oil fill neck to wiggle my driver's side valve cover out of the 82. I am replacing the cover gasket. During cleanup I noticed that the fill neck was previously sealed to the valve cover with RTV over what I assume was the original seal. Questions:
    1. Was the orig seal an o-ring?
    2. Was it a round piece of hard black plastic (like an o-ring, but hard, having flats on both sides)?
    3. Where can I get another (Chevy has discontinued the seal)?

I have fabricated a similar o-ring seal (cut and glued), but before I reassemble, I am looking for guidance.

I have not looked in my assy manual , because the wife has hidden it from me again...along with my socks!

    Thanks, Dave

I am not aware that 1982's originally used an oil fill tube. I thought the oil filler cap mounted directly to the valve cover. Can you post a photo of what you have?

Checking further, there apparently was an oil fill tube used for 1982 Corvettes. It was GM #14047081 and was sort of a "S" shaped tube, apparently used to make access to the oil fill easier considering the large TBI air filter. However, I cannot find than any gasket was ever available separately from GM for this tube. There was what GM describes as a "nut", GM #14047089, but it's long-since GM-discontinued.

1982 also used a special and unique oil filler cap of GM #14047082. However, I do not know how it differed from earlier caps. It's also long-since GM discontinued.

Joe, yes this is the "S" tube. There is a shallow o-ring groove on the bottom side of the 14047082 nut. So shallow that I assumed that it was NOT for an o-ring, as it is not deep enough to retain the o-ring without it dropping off. Of course, a bit of vacuum grease or Vaseline will cure this ailment. It is probable that the 14047082 is a nut assy that included an o-ring (or whatever this seal is/was).

USMILVET over on the Corvetteforum posed that he thought it was an o-ring. I will probably press forward with that approach unless someone comes up with additional info.

As to the oil cap...I don't know what I have. I assume it is the original, but it has no markings on it, other than "assembled in Mexico" on the underside. It fits tight and is in good condition.

      Thanks, Dave

I think the o-ring will work well, whether or not that was what was originally used. And, no one will ever know the difference.

By 1982 a lot of GM parts were being made in Mexico. So, that source does not imply a non-original part.
